The latest generation EPMA, the Cameca SX100, allows the detection of chemical elements from beryllium to uranium, in any kind of material (glass, metal, polymer, geomaterial, biomaterial, etc.). Its resolution and sensibility make it a very useful device permitting the qualitative and quantitative determination of anomalies, modifications or alteration of materials at the micron cube scale (wearing, aging, breakage, mixing, introduction of impurities, diffusion, corrosion, etc.). These capabilities are useful in several different fields: metallurgy, mecanics, surface treatment, textiles, coating, organic synthesis, mineral synthesis, medicine, glass, geology, expert testimony, etc.
The EPMA is dedicated to training and research, and to aiding the development of private companies. The ENSCL’s activities are directed generally toward the study of biomaterials, but also toward functional or multifunctional coatings (for example, anticorrosive or flame retardant coatings), as well as the material and transportation sectors which are major industries in the region.
