Reader in Bioorganic Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hull.

Research Director of Sporomex Ltd, a University of Hull spin-out company having 4 lead patents extending to 3 at PCT and 14 patents in individual countries and 4 collaborative agreements with major food and pharmaceutical companies.

Published over 140 papers in the fields of chemistry relating to carbohydrates, lipids, nucleosides, nitrogen heterocycles, self assembly and synthesis of glycolipids and sporopollenin; financial support for this work has come from the research councils, Wellcome Trust, EPSRC, BBSRC and companies both in the UK and Japan.

Support for international exchange has been derived from NATO, British Council (two Alliance programmes), Socrates, Leonardo and various regions in France including Bretagne, Picardie and Ile de France.

Visiting Professorship at the University of Hokkaido Japan (1989) and a CNRS Poste Rouge Director de Recherche at the Université de Lyon, France (1988-1989).

Visiting Professorships in France including the Université de Picardie Jules Verne (1992 to 2005), Universté d’Artois (2005-2007) and Université de Limoges (2006-2007).

Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Chartered Chemist (Programme Secretary for North Humberside Section 1986-1991, Vice Chairman-Chairman 1991-1992 and Chairman 1992-1993 and 2000-2001); Member of The Biochemical Society, The Society for Drug Research, MRC AIDS Directed Programme, - Working-Group on Chemical Synthesis (1992-1996) and the International Society of Nucleic Acid Chemistry (Preparatory Committee Member), grants referee for the Czech National Academy of Sciences.

Some 24 years teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Supervised (either as first or second supervisor) 34 PhD students in English and French universities.

External examiner for undergraduate courses at University of Central Lancashire (1991-1995), Manchester Metropolitan University (2005-2008), Leeds University Colour Chemistry (2005-2008), Teesside University (1996-2000) and postgraduate courses at the Université de Picardie Jules Verne France (1991-to date and Napier University (2001-2004).
